FAQ: Work Team 2027

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The first several questions on this page have answers; those lower in the list will be completed soon. Thank you for your patience! If you have questions you'd like answered sooner, please contact Erika Musser, erika@pathfrompoverty.org.

  • What will we actually be doing in Kenya?

Our work team will spend about a week in Kimuumo village, in the Ukambani region of southeastern Kenya, working alongside women who participate in Path From Poverty's local groups. Together, we'll construct concrete bases for rainwater catchment tanks, helping families gain access to a more reliable source of water.

But the trip is about much more than construction! We'll spend time getting to know our Kenyan partners, learning about their lives and communities, visiting PFP groups, worshiping together, learning from them about local culture, and celebrating what we've accomplished.

We'll also spend a couple of days exploring Nairobi before traveling to the work site, and finish the trip at Amboseli National Park, enjoying time to relax along with multiple safari drives to view African wildlife.

  • Will we be evangelizing?

No, this not an evangelism or missionary outreach trip. Our primary purpose is to work alongside our Kenyan partners, build relationships, and learn from one another.

Path From Poverty is a Christian

organization, and faith is an important part of our shared experience. We'll have opportunities to worship and pray together with our Kenyan partners, most of whom are Christians themselves.

  • Do I need to be Christian?

No. While Path From Poverty is a Christian organization, you do not need to be Christian to participate. Our goal is to bring together people who share a commitment to partnership, mutual respect, and working toward a better future.

However, it is important to understand that the Christian faith is woven into the experience, including worship, prayer, and discussions about faith. We ask that all team members participate respectfully in these activities, regardless of their personal beliefs. Most of our Kenyan partners share this faith, and it is important to them, and sometimes to their husbands and families, that the behaviors and attitudes of our work team members reflect Christian principles.

For these reasons, we also strive to assemble a team that is made up of a majority of Christians.

  • Can men join the work team?

Yes! While you can expect the majority of team members to be women, we welcome men who are prepared to respect the leadership of women. Women hold all leadership positions in Path From Poverty, both in the U.S. during training and trip prep, and on the ground in Kenya, where Kenyan women are the experts and they lead our activities.

  • Can children or teenagers come?

Teens aged 14 and up are welcome. Indeed, our Kenyan hosts embrace young team members with love and excitement! Minors must be accompanied by an adult team member who agrees to be responsible for the youth participant.

  • Where will we be staying?

The first two nights we will stay at ACK Guest House in Nairobi, a property run by the Anglican Church of Kenya. Then we’ll travel to Ukambani and stay at Paraiso Gardens Hotel in the town of Wote (pop. ~20,000), about seven kilometers from our work sites in Kimuumo village. For the final two nights of the trip, we will stay at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. (Bring your swimsuit!)

In Nairobi and at Amboseli, you will be sharing a room. In Wote, we will have single rooms with the exception of minors and married couples.

  • Do I need construction experience or special skills?

Not at all! We'll be working alongside Kenyan partners who know how to build the tank bases, and there will be opportunities for people with different abilities and experience levels to contribute.

More important than any particular skill is a willingness to pitch in, learn, work as part of a team, and build relationships.

The trip does involve physical work, unfamiliar surroundings, and some long days. However, there are opportunities for you to serve even if you can’t lift a shovel! If you have questions about your ability to participate or accommodations you might need, please talk with us. We'll work together to determine whether the trip can be a safe and comfortable experience for you.
